Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 4

A four disc set, this has a theme for each disc, just as previous volumes did. The first disc is a spotlight on Bugs Bunny of course. Despite three Bugs-centric discs in past editions, there are still some great cartoons of his out there, as this attests. We get fifteen of them, most notably Forward March Hare, the classic tale of Bugs getting drafted into the army.
Disc two is a tribute to the legacy of director Frank Tashlin, who later moved into directing live-action films. Some of the funniest stuff on the set is to be found here, like Plane Daffy, which has the crazed fowl facing off with Nazis. Tashlin may not have been the most well-known Looney Tunes creator, but his stuff is still funny.
The third disc is a spotlight on Speedy Gonzalez, and it?s a bit of a revelation. See, here?s the thing that I, along with most everyone else I?m sure, didn?t know: Speedy cartoons used to be funny. Check out the first three or so of his early shorts, and you?ll see what I mean. Tabasco Road is one I?d never seen before and it is now one of my favorite LTs ever (see if you don?t laugh at the line "Don?t stick out your tongue at me, gato!"). Sure, the character got a little blander when they started pairing him up with Sylvester, but those early ones are just as funny as anything else the LT crew did.
The fourth and final disc, entitled "Kitty Korner" is devoted entirely to cartoons with cat characters. And guess what? Almost no Sylvester at all! That leaves us with such things as the surreal The Aristo-Cat and the charming Cat Feud.
Simply put, this collection of 60 animated shorts is just as good as the previous sets, and now that Warner Bros is venturing out into more eclectic territory on these, the results can be even more fun. The restoration of the shorts is magnificent all around, and the special features are numerous. We get the entire full-length 1970s documentary Bugs Bunny, Superstar, some of the "lost" military shorts created by the studio during and after World War II, and even the infamous "blooper" reel of Porky Pig stuttering an obscenity. Yes, this isn?t aimed at kids, as the cartoons are uncensored and uncut, which means a lot of ethnic jokes and stereotypes are included. There?s so many more extras on here, it could take me two more pages to go into all of them, like the commentaries, most of which are great (Jerry Beck?s are always informative, but I?m getting kind of tired of hearing voice actor Stan Freberg repeating the same stories he has the last two volumes. Nice guy, but let?s find something new for this wonderful character voice to say).
The flaws of the set are minimal, to me at least. One of the Snafu shorts in the extras has audio problems that should have been corrected, and the new packaging this year leaves the discs on top of each other, causing more chances to be scratched. Otherwise, it?s a top of the line set.
No animation fan should be without this fourth volume (or the previous three, for that matter) of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection. The only thing I?m really disappointed after watching it for the upteenth time is that now I have to wait another year to get volume five.
